We have been asked by a client to take their drawing files, make some changes and return the files to them. The problem is they use FastCAD 6 and we use AutoCAD 2008.
1) What format should they convert the files to so that we can open them in AutoCAD 2008?
2) What format should we save the files to when done so they can open them with FastCAD 6? I've been told we can save files in 2008, 2004, 2000 and even version 14 AutoCAD format. Will any of these work in FastCAD 6?
3) The client said they were initially able to open a few AutoCAD 2000 files, but then recently they can't open them anymore with FastCAD 6. Any ideas what they should do?
1 & 2. FastCAD 6.53 (the latest update is available on the FastCAD website and has increased acad compatibility) can be set to save acad 2007-2008 files. Setting this, under Specs/Settings/DWG/DXF, should allow a .DWG or .DXF file to be saved that opens properly in acad.
3. Try saving the files in earlier acad versions, assuming there is no loss of information. Try DXF.
There are other complications that can interfere with the cross-platform compatibility between acad and any other CAD program. Proprietary stuff, like that generated with architectural desktop, can make a mess.
Otherwise, for the best compatibility, it would be advisable for your client to upgrade to version 7 of FastCAD. It has the most up-to-date .dwg and .dxf translation.
Of course, my advice to you would be to get rid of acad and change to the best CAD program money can buy, FastCAD. Like me, you'll never look back. At least, if you deal with this situation often, you might get a copy of FastCAD to be better able to monitor compatibility.

FastCAD versions before 6.50 are limited to 2004 dwg and earlier formats. The best interchange format with AutoCAD, industry-wide, is R14.
Jeff's point about the add-ons (anything that generates proxy entities) is especially valid - few other programs can import those drawings completely.
They (or you) can download the free trial version to see if it will load and save back the information of concern to you. 2010 support is scheduled for early November. Until then, 2009 and earlier is supported in v6.50+ and v7.50+.
